Agent-Nuvira — User Manual

Product version: 3.3.0 · Document revision: 2026-09-23 Scope: the CLI in full depth, the web dashboard, messaging channels, skills, workflows, and everything the agent can do beyond writing code — every example in this manual was run against this build before it was written (see §15 Verification log).

Every example in this manual was executed against build v3.3.0 before it was written. Where a command needs a credential, a paid provider or an optional binary, that is stated inline rather than assumed.

1. What Agent-Nuvira is

Agent-Nuvira is a multi-agent AI coding CLI. It plans, writes, reviews, tests and publishes code using local models (Ollama) or cloud APIs, and it is reachable from a terminal, a web dashboard, or any of 22 messaging platforms.

At a glance — every number below was produced by a command in this manual:

Surface Size Command that proves it
CLI command entries 289, across 48 top-level groups the published Full Command Surface
Agent tools 110 nuvira tools list
Inference providers 22 nuvira provider list
Messaging platforms 22 nuvira gateway status
Skills on disk 155 (152 compiled) nuvira skills list / nuvira skill list
Built-in workflow templates 10 nuvira workflow list
Dashboard pages 22 see §5
Vetted MCP servers 6 nuvira mcp catalog

The three binaries agent-nuvira, buff and nuvira are the same program.

2. Install and first run

Requirement: Node >= 18.18.0 (engines in package.json).

npm install -g agent-nuvira
nuvira --version # → 3.3.0

First run

# 1. Give it at least one key
nuvira config set providers.groq.apiKey "gsk_..."
# or use the OS-keychain vault instead of plaintext:
nuvira config vault set groq

# 2. Confirm the environment
nuvira doctor

# 3. Talk to it
nuvira chat "explain what this project does"

nuvira doctor prints a full health report: config directory, secret vault tier, memory store, SQLite workspace registry, plugin directories, CLI tool versions, and a per-provider probe. On the reference machine it reported ✅ Secret Vault: OS keychain active (Tier 1) and ✅ Workspace DB: SQLite project registry — 59 project(s) tracked.

Expect the first run to be slow. Model discovery walks every provider you have a key for.

3. Configuration

There are four layers, highest priority first:

  1. CLI flags — --provider, --model
  2. Environment variables — GROQ_API_KEY, GEMINI_API_KEY, … (one variable per provider)
  3. Config file — ~/.nuvira/ (or --cwd/NUVIRA_CONFIG_DIR)
  4. Defaults

The commands you need

nuvira config list # providers + model + key status
nuvira config get providers.groq.model
nuvira config set providers.groq.model llama-3.3-70b-versatile
nuvira config init # create a fresh config

Secret vault

nuvira config vault status
nuvira config vault migrate-keys # move plaintext keys into the vault
nuvira config vault log # access audit trail

One provider, many keys

A provider can hold an array of keys (apiKeys[]), and the single-shot walk rotates through every non-parked key before it switches providers. Environment variables can hold only one key per provider, so multi-account setups must live in config or the vault, not in .env.

Honest scope note: today the key rotation runs in the plan and edit walks. chat, execute and the pipeline fail over by provider. Unifying every surface onto one account-aware walk is the next milestone — see Limitations and roadmap.

4. The CLI in depth

4.1 Anatomy

nuvira <group> <subcommand> [args] [flags]
nuvira -t "<task>" # one-shot: shorthand for chat "<task>"
nuvira --debug <cmd> # debug logging

4.2 The 48 top-level groups

admin chat edit plan config cache models execute
run workflow whatsapp plugins learn init stats history
skill skills gateway model benchmark eval sandbox doctor
memory dashboard agent federation team sdk provider security
audit sbom feedback nlu intent code-map tools session
marketplace mcp ci publish bedrock phase retrieval trace

nuvira --help lists them with one-line descriptions; nuvira <group> --help lists the subcommands; nuvira <group> --help shows flags and examples.

4.3 Where the full reference lives

File What it is
Full Command Surface Generated from the live commander tree — 289 entries, the authoritative list.
Command reference Curated prose: objective, command, example per entry (88 sections).

That document is generated from the live command tree by the project's own build, and a drift guard fails CI if a command is added or renamed without regenerating it — so the reference cannot describe a command that does not exist.

4.4 The fifteen commands you will actually use

nuvira chat "refactor the auth module" # interactive / one-shot conversation
nuvira edit src/app.ts "add input validation" # surgical AI edit
nuvira plan "migrate to Postgres" # implementation plan
nuvira execute "add rate limiting" # full multi-agent pipeline
nuvira -t "why is the build failing" # one-shot shorthand
nuvira workflow run quick-fix "fix the typo" # template-driven pipeline
nuvira skill run security-audit # run a compiled skill
nuvira models # every model on every provider
nuvira provider list # provider health table
nuvira doctor # full system diagnosis
nuvira dashboard # web UI on :3030
nuvira gateway status # messaging channels
nuvira intent resolve "stop the dashboard" # plain English → exact command
nuvira security scan "<text>" # injection / PII / dangerous-code scan
nuvira stats # sessions + cost

4.5 Non-interactive and CI

nuvira ci execute "<goal>" # JSON result; exit 0 = success, 1 = failure
nuvira ci check "<goal>" # gate check, minimal output
nuvira ci review <files...> # JSON findings for changed files

ci check is designed for pipeline gates: exit code only. Use it where you would otherwise grep human output.

5. The Dashboard

nuvira dashboard # http://127.0.0.1:3030, opens a browser
nuvira dashboard --port 3031 --no-open
nuvira dashboard --build # rebuild assets first
nuvira dashboard --force # restart a stale dashboard on the port
nuvira dashboard --no-gateway # do not start messaging alongside
nuvira dashboard stop # graceful SIGTERM, from any terminal

There is also a /bedrock onboarding route that is not in the left nav.

Key point: the dashboard is not a separate product. Its console delegates to the same chat engine, its channel send-test uses the same gateway, and its model/routing/cost panels read the same ledger the CLI writes.

First login, and the password you must change

A fresh install bootstraps admin / admin, so nobody has to invent a password before they can look at the dashboard. That pair is published — anyone who can reach the port knows it — which is exactly why the account it creates is deliberately crippled: while it is still on the default it can change nothing. Every mutating admin route (provider configuration, API keys, users, shutdown) is refused, and the only two operations that work are changing the password and logging out. Reads stay allowed, because they expose no secrets.

So the first screen you meet is a forced password change. Pick at least 8 characters; from that moment it is an ordinary admin account.

  • Credentials live in ~/.nuvira/dashboard-admin.json (honours NUVIRA_CONFIG_DIR) as a scrypt hash. The password itself is never written to disk.
  • Sessions are in-memory Bearer tokens with an 8-hour expiry, and restarting the dashboard invalidates them. The surface is local-first, so that is the intended trade rather than an oversight.
  • Repeated failed logins are rate-limited (HTTP 429 after a handful of attempts).
  • The bootstrap runs only when no admin exists, so a real credential is never overwritten.
  • The CLI is unaffected: this gate covers the dashboard's write routes. nuvira config set behaves exactly as it always did.

Automation that cannot answer a prompt sets NUVIRA_DASHBOARD_ADMIN_PASSWORD (optionally with NUVIRA_DASHBOARD_ADMIN_USER and NUVIRA_DASHBOARD_ADMIN_ROLE). That override wins over the file and is exempt from the forced change, so a service can never be locked out of its own dashboard. NUVIRA_DASHBOARD_DEFAULT_ADMIN=0 skips the bootstrap entirely.

Users and roles

An admin adds people from the Admin page (/admin). The first user is always an admin; every user after that is created by an admin with an explicit role. Three details are worth knowing:

  • Role resolution has one chain: the env override for its own user, then ~/.nuvira/rbac.json when the username appears there (so the dashboard and nuvira admin role read the same file), then the credential's own role. An unknown user resolves to viewer — the failure mode is deny.
  • You cannot remove your own user, and the last admin cannot be removed, so the UI cannot strand an installation with nobody able to administer it.
  • A session carries the role it was issued with, so a role change applies at the next login.

Opening a project in the console

The console is directory-scoped, like the CLI. The picker offers the dashboard's own working directory plus every path already attached to the session, with a folder browser for anything else. Choose a project there and the conversation, the file tools, the diff view and the run all operate on that directory — the same as starting nuvira chat inside it.

Run it at login (optional)

nuvira dashboard is a foreground process, and nothing in the CLI installs a boot service. If you want it back after a reboot, add the unit yourself. Two details decide whether it works:

  1. Use an absolute path to the binary. A login service does not inherit your shell's PATH; which nuvira gives the path to paste into the unit.
  2. Provider keys must be reachable without your shell. Tokens written by nuvira gateway setup live in ~/.nuvira/.env, which is loaded at startup, so those are fine. A key you only ever export in .zshrc or .bashrc is not visible to a service: move it into the config (nuvira config vault set <provider>) or declare it in the unit.

6. Channels and the Gateway

nuvira gateway lets you drive the agent from a messaging app. Inbound text is dispatched through the same pipeline as nuvira chat / nuvira execute; progress and the final result are sent back to the channel.

Start and inspect

nuvira gateway status # per-platform table + reachable channels
nuvira gateway start # start the gateway (+ webhook receiver on :8787)
nuvira gateway stop
nuvira gateway setup telegram # interactive wizard (no env-var memorising)

Reference-machine output (4 platforms live at once):

✅ gateway RUNNING — pid 11858, up 4h 26m, 4/4 adapters live, beat 6s ago
✅ Telegram (long-poll, Bot API)
✅ Slack (webhook)
✅ WhatsApp (Baileys bridge — paired, self-chat mode)
✅ SMS (Twilio +91…)
⬜ Discord (not configured) … 17 more
  4/22 platforms configured

The 22 platforms: Telegram, Slack, WhatsApp (Baileys bridge), WhatsApp Business (Meta Cloud API), SMS (Twilio), Discord, DingTalk, Feishu, WeCom, Mattermost, Matrix, Webhook, BlueBubbles, ntfy, Teams, Google Chat, Weixin, IRC, SimpleX, Home Assistant, Email, Signal.

Send, alias, and know who may trigger

nuvira gateway send whatsapp:9199… "build finished"
nuvira gateway send-media telegram:<chatId> ./chart.png
nuvira gateway alias add myteam telegram <chat-id>
nuvira gateway contact add Rahul <number> # send-by-name (does NOT grant trigger access)

Two separate permission systems — do not confuse them:

# Who may TRIGGER the agent (inbound)
nuvira config gateway allow whatsapp user <number>
nuvira config gateway disallow whatsapp user <number>
nuvira config gateway reply whatsapp polite # or: silent

# Who may command the agent to SEND to other people (outbound)
nuvira config gateway send-authority add telegram <id>

Reliability and observability

nuvira gateway delivery # guaranteed-delivery ledger; --flush drains
nuvira gateway history # per-contact memory of what was said
nuvira gateway logs # why a message did or did not go out
nuvira whatsapp pair # pair a personal number via QR (no paid API)
nuvira config gateway notify add <contact> # always receive completion summaries

First channel in five minutes

The wizard handles the part people get wrong: it prompts for exactly the variables the platform needs, stores them where both the CLI and the dashboard read them, and then tests the credential against the live service before claiming success.

nuvira gateway setup telegram # interactive — asks for the @BotFather token and validates it
nuvira gateway status # what is configured, what is reachable
nuvira gateway start # run the adapters in the foreground (Ctrl-C to stop)

Telegram. Open Telegram, talk to @BotFather, create a bot and paste the token into the wizard. It calls the Bot API with that token and only reports success when Telegram accepts it. Then send your bot a message — that first inbound message is how you learn your own chat id for the allow-list below.

WhatsApp is the personal-number bridge. It needs no Meta Business account and no paid API:

nuvira whatsapp pair # prints a QR — scan it from WhatsApp -> Linked devices
nuvira whatsapp status

Pairing links your own number and runs in self-chat mode (message yourself, or use the contact mapping). The same pairing is available from the dashboard's WhatsApp panel, which is easier when you are already in the browser.

Where the credentials land. Platform tokens are written to ~/.nuvira/.env (NUVIRA_ENV_FILE overrides it) by both the wizard and the dashboard's Channels tab, preserving comments and unrelated keys. whatsapp is deliberately different: a paired session on disk, not a token. The variable names are NUVIRA_TELEGRAM_TOKEN, NUVIRA_DISCORD_BOT_TOKEN, NUVIRA_SLACK_BOT_TOKEN, NUVIRA_WHATSAPP_TOKEN (Meta Cloud API only), and so on per platform.

Adding the people who may use it

A configured channel is not an open door. Two independent lists decide what may happen, and conflating them is how a bot ends up speaking for you:

Question Governs Set it with
Who may trigger the agent? inbound nuvira config gateway allow <platform> user <id>
Who may the agent send to? outbound nuvira config gateway send-authority add <platform> <id>
nuvira config gateway allow whatsapp user 9198… # this person may drive the agent
nuvira config gateway disallow whatsapp user 9198… # revoke it
nuvira config gateway reply whatsapp polite # or: silent

An unknown sender is neither obeyed nor necessarily dropped: nuvira gateway contact list shows those pending, and approve / reject decides. nuvira gateway contact add Name <number> is only a send-by-name convenience — it deliberately does not grant trigger access.

Keeping it running

nuvira gateway start --supervise # restart the adapters automatically if they exit
nuvira gateway delivery # guaranteed-delivery ledger (--flush drains it)
nuvira gateway logs # why a message did or did not go out

--supervise is the answer to a crash; it is not the answer to a reboot. For that, add a login unit as shown in Run it at login. One trap: nuvira dashboard starts a gateway beside itself (--no-gateway prevents that, --keep-gateway keeps it after the dashboard stops). If you also enable a standalone gateway unit you will have two adapters answering the same platform — pick one owner.

7. Skills

A skill is a reusable execution plan — a named, parameterised sequence of specialised agent steps. This build ships 155 skills on disk and 152 compiled.

nuvira skills list # what is installed
nuvira skill list # compiled skills with quality + use count
nuvira skill show security-audit # full definition: steps, agents, params
nuvira skills search docker # search by need
nuvira skill run security-audit # execute it

Running one

nuvira skill run security-audit --dry-run
nuvira skill run security-audit --params "focus=secrets,authz" --auto-route
nuvira skill run docker-config --params "scope=." --memory

Useful flags: --params "k=v,…", --provider, --model, --auto-route (route each step to the best model), --memory (learn from the run), --dry-run (print the task plan and stop), -v.

--dry-run is the right way to see what a skill will do without spending a token. Example — nuvira skill run security-audit --dry-run prints a 5-step plan with agent types:

🧠 Skill: security-audit v1.0.0
   5 step(s) prepared:
[context-gatherer] Map the attack surface with evidence…
[security] Scan for vulnerability classes — read real files…
     [reviewer] Classify and prioritize findings…
[writer] Produce the security audit artifact…
[runner] Apply the quick-win fixes and verify each one

Hygiene

nuvira skill quality # quality scores
nuvira skill gc # garbage-collect low-value skills
nuvira skill compile # extract new skills from trajectories
nuvira skills install <name>
nuvira skills update
nuvira skills bundle # bundle related skills

8. Workflows

A workflow is a fixed pipeline (unlike a skill, which is typically derived from past runs). Ten ship built-in:

Template Shape Tags
quick-fix context → edit → test → review (5 steps) —
create-and-run write → run → review (3) —
feature-implement plan → gather → write → test → review (7) 🧠 memory
publish-release test → version → review → publish (7) release, publish, devops
api-scaffold scaffold a REST API (6) api, scaffold, rest, backend
security-audit scan → review deps (4) security, audit, scan
refactor-module module-level refactor + tests (6) refactor, cleanup, optimize
code-review staged changes review (4) review, code-quality, git
bug-hunt reproduce → diagnose → fix (6) debug, fix, bug
test-generation generate unit/integration tests (5) test, coverage, qa
nuvira workflow list
nuvira workflow run quick-fix "fix the failing test in auth"
nuvira workflow run feature-implement "add CSV export" --auto-route
nuvira workflow search security # search the registry
nuvira workflow install <name>
nuvira workflow info <name>
nuvira workflow publish # share your own

--dry-run previews without writing to disk; note it still runs the pipeline (it means "do not persist file changes", not "do not call a model").

9. Beyond code: the tool surface

The agent has 110 tools. This is the honest list of what it can do that is not "write a file". Categories below are descriptive; run nuvira tools list for the live registry.

Filesystem & code — read_file, write_file, edit_file, list_dir, glob, code_search, working_diff, read_extract (PDF/DOCX/XLSX/PPTX/HTML/CSV), patch_parser, clone_repo (assess another repo without touching yours).

Execution — run_terminal, run_cli, code_execution (sandboxed), docker, process_registry, daemon_pool, cronjob, checkpoint.

Web & browser — web_search, read_page, browser (live page automation), browser_supervisor, browser_dialog, camofox, url_safety, computer_use (desktop control without stealing focus).

Multimodal — generate_image, video_generate, describe_image, vision, speak, transcribe, tts_streaming, neutts_synth, wake_word, voice_mode.

Messaging & integrations — gateway_send (deliver a result to someone else), messaging, discord, microsoft_graph (mail/calendar/OneDrive), feishu_doc, feishu_drive, homeassistant, kanban.

Agents & memory — delegate, delegate_system, async_delegation, subagent, plan_todo, memory, add_memory, search_memory, list_memories, skills_hub, skills_sync, skill_usage, skill_provenance.

Security & compliance — ast_audit, security_score, threat_patterns, path_security, osv_check, sanitize, env_probe, sbom (via CLI).

Meta — ask_user, approval, write_approval, interrupt, todo, tool_search, tool_output_limits, tool_result_storage, budget_config, analyze, build, document, repair, resume, test, website.

Examples

"Open the login page in a browser, screenshot it, and tell me what is broken."
"Generate a hero image for the landing page and save it to ./assets."
"Transcribe ./standup.m4a and write the action items to notes.md."
"Clone owner/repo and give me a security assessment of it."
"Read the Q3.pdf and extract every table into CSV."
"Turn off the office lights via Home Assistant."
"Every morning at 9, check OSV for new advisories in our dependencies and message me."
"Send the changelog summary to Rahul on WhatsApp." # needs send-authority

nuvira intent resolve — plain English → exact command

$ nuvira intent resolve "stop the dashboard"
🧭 intent: dashboard.stop (score 1.00) — matched "stop the dashboard"
   command: nuvira dashboard stop

It also detects ambiguity and gives you both readings:

$ nuvira intent resolve "add Rahul to whatsapp"
⚠ AMBIGUOUS — ask the user which they mean:
  • Verified list — the number may trigger the agent
→ nuvira config gateway allow whatsapp user <number>
  • Send-by-name mapping — lets YOU send to them by name
→ nuvira whatsapp contact add Rahul <number>

models excluded is the honest debugging surface for "why won't it use X":

🚫 local/gemini-3.1-flash-lite — this model does not exist on that provider
♻️ Recovered: ✅ gemini/gemma-4-26b-a4b-it — rate-limit failure has expired; routable now
👀 A provider that stays skipped with a working key is a bug — `nuvira models unblock <provider>`

11. Cookbook: copy-paste recipes

Fix a bug end to end

nuvira workflow run bug-hunt "login fails when the email has a plus sign"
nuvira ci check "the login plus-sign bug is fixed"

Audit your own repo

nuvira skill run security-audit --params "focus=secrets, ssrf"
nuvira security scan "$(git diff --cached)"
nuvira sbom > sbom.json
nuvira code-map src > map.txt

Containerise a project

nuvira skill run docker-config --params "scope=." --dry-run # inspect the plan first
nuvira skill run docker-config --params "scope=." --auto-route

Ask about a project you do not own

nuvira chat "clone vercel/next.js and summarise how routing is implemented"

Drive it from your phone

nuvira gateway setup telegram
nuvira gateway start
# then message the bot: "fix the failing test"

Wire it into CI

- run: nuvira ci check "no TypeScript errors introduced"
- run: nuvira security scan "$(git log -1 --pretty=%B)"

13. Limitations and roadmap

Honest scope notes: what is deliberately narrow today, and where it is heading.

Multi-account key rotation is scoped to plan and edit. A provider can hold several keys (apiKeys[]), and the single-shot walk rotates through every non-parked key of that provider before it switches providers. The interactive chat and execute surfaces currently fail over by provider. Unifying every surface onto one account-aware walk — with account-scoped failure attribution, so a rate limit on one key never deprioritises the provider — is the next milestone.

First runs are slow. Initial model discovery walks every provider you hold a credential for. Later runs use the cache.

Provider coverage is broad, so polish is uneven. Twenty-two providers speak the same interface; the most-used ones are exercised hardest.

Model selection is dynamic, so a rejected pair is possible. Pairs the provider refuses are retired and re-probed. Cross-provider propagation of a model id on the orchestrator path is on the roadmap; pinning --provider and --model is the reliable workaround today.

No telemetry, by design. Nothing leaves your machine except the requests to the model providers you configure — which also means there is no cloud dashboard. The local dashboard is the source of truth.

Messaging channels need credentials and policy. Who may trigger the agent and who may direct it to send to other people are two separate permission lists, because conflating them is a security bug.

14. Troubleshooting

Symptom Do this
Provider not being used nuvira models excluded, then nuvira models unblock <provider>
"Model does not exist" errors nuvira models staleness; the pair may be dead — see §13.1
Dashboard stale / API mismatch nuvira dashboard --force
Gateway silent nuvira gateway status, nuvira gateway logs, nuvira gateway delivery
Someone cannot trigger the bot nuvira config gateway allow <platform> user <id> (separate from send-by-name)
Cannot send to a third party grant outbound authority: nuvira config gateway send-authority add …
Slow first run Model discovery walks every provider — expected
